Oh boy. I got myself a blog. I feel like the world is at my fingertips. I get to talk alll I want and all of you little blog junkies have to listen...or... I get to type all I want … and all of you have to .. read...? Alright, alright. No one has to do anything they don’t want to do. That goes for me too: "Thou doth not have to blog if thou doth not want to." Which means I am free to go years without posting on here again, and no one can give me any lip about it. Mmm freedom.
Anyway, you're probably wondering why I named my blog "hole here, whole there" ... sometimes I still don't completely get it (that sounds deep). For real though, one night while I was in Texas visiting my family, I shot straight up in bed, eyes wide open. Carly, my little sister, shot straight up in bed next to me, "What's wrong!? What is it?!" Tears started pouring down my cheeks and I let out with a cry, "Hole here, whole there! I thought of my blog title!"
Hahaha none of that story is true. I really did think of the title in the middle of the night though.
Every time I’m in Texas, my little sisters and I make “muffs” (blueberry muffins with the crumblies on top). This tradition usually warrants a midnight run around the corner to Tom Thumb. One night during my last trip out to Texas, the boy checking us out at the grocery store started to make small talk. He glanced over at me, presumably noticing my nose ring and earrings. "I like your piercings," he said, to which I simply replied with a “thank you,” but the boy went on to tell me about how he wishes he could get his ears and nose pierced. He told me he has a rare blood disease, and that his body can’t physically handle being pierced. I could not believe how much information this boy unloaded in the three minutes I spent at his counter. One of his dreams was to have holes permanently placed on his body. Seems a little crazy, right?
About twelve hours after this conversation with the sadistic grocery boy, I found myself on the way to a doctor’s appointment for my TMJ. He ended up being more of a masseuse than a doctor, but of course I didn’t object. This guy was really nice, but kind of freaky. He’s into internal medicine, and in his dimly lit patient rooms he plays this odd, ambient music (crickets, waterfalls, road construction, etc.). The only medicine this guy prescribes is yoga and diet change…very “new agey.” Anyway, as he began to rub my shoulders I told him the right side of my jaw was causing the most pain. He immediately moved to my left side. After a minute or two, I said, “I’m sorry if I mumbled, but it’s actually my right side that hurts, not my left.” He stopped working for moment and said, “Exactly. If your right side is what’s hurting, your left side is the problem.” Seeing that I was obviously confused, he continued, “Your left side is wound so tightly that your right side is attempting to compensate by opening too widely. Pain is caused when one side unsuccessfully attempts to compensate for the stress being placed on the other.”
I’ve seen so many doctors regarding my TMJ, but this was news to me. Makes sense when you think about it though. Then he said something that, for no specific reason, rung in my ears: “We were created to be whole; our bodies ache for balance.”
Homeboy nailed it. And he pulled it off with a seemingly unintentional play on words.
Everything around us screams that “holes” are desirable and in fashion, when in reality, by design, we were created to crave Wholeness.
One of my favorite quotes by C.S. Lewis is: "If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world."
Hole here. Whole there.
